PART II
NARRATIVE SUMMARY

1.   H&S COMPANY.   The Company remained in the Battalion CP  (AT 989711)
Danang TAOR from the 1st through 15th.   On the 16th the Battalion CP and
H&S Company moved to the Phu Bai TAOR.   The Battalion and H&S Company came
under operational control of 3d MarDiv.   The Battalion CP was estabished
at  (YD 82551535).   H&S Company remained in the Battalion CP throughout
the rest of the month.   During the month of March, the reaction force
conducted nineteen  (19)  night patrol/ambushes and eleven  (11)  daylight
patrols in the 3D AT Bn AOR at Danang.   The Reaction force also conducted
twelve  (12)  night patrol/ambushes and four  (4)  daylight patrols in the
3D AT Bn AOR in the Phu Bai TAOR at Phu Bai.   This force was also called
upon by Smokeroom to act as a block force in a combined unit operation
three  (3)  times during the month.   Reinforced triple strand of concertina
wire was placed around the outer perimeter of the new CP.   Seven  (7)
machine gun emplacements were built pending receipt bunker material for
permanent emplacement.   Twenty one  (21)  claymore mines have been placed
in the perimeter defense plus one hundres trip flares.   Seventy two
(72) more trip flares are in the process of being installed.   One  (1)
daylight 100% alert exercise was conducted by the Battalion.   All seven  (7)
bunkers stand 50% alert during the hours of darkness.   Two  (2)  daylight
observation posts are manned from daylight until dark.   The Company is
in process of sand bagging all living quarters with a 360 degree wall
of sandbags 36 inches high.   This project is approximately 50% completed.
This project will continue until completed.   (Ref.  H&S Chronology)

2.   COMPANY "A".   During the month of March Company "A" continued to
support the 3rd Marines in Operation Prairie II and III.   Sections of
the platoons were deployed with "M" Co 3/3, "K" Co 3/3 and "L" Co 3/9.
During the Viet Cong mortar attacks on Camp Carroll  (6-7 March) 4 tents
received schrapnel holes and one Marine was WIA.   The GIO LINH area was
reconnoitered for Ontos employment and on 25 March a light Section was
deployed there.   During the month a total of 746 rounds were fired as
H&I, 92 rounds in direct support, 60 rounds registrated and 50 rounds
for recon by fire with unknown results.   A MedCap was conducted in the
Hamlet of PhonXe.?   Treated 86 Vietnamese for various ailments.   (Ref.

3.   COMPANY "B".   This Company remained in support of the 4th Marines
and Operation Chinook II.   The platoons have been conducting patrols
in support of infantry units around their perimeters.   Cross country
trafficability has improved to an excellent condition in all areas.
A total of 982 rounds of H&I were fired and 6 rounds of direct fire in
support of infantry units - Results unknown.   (Ref.  "B" Co. Chronology)

4.   COMPANY "C".   The Company is in support of 2/26 and 2/4  (1st platoon).
2/4  (2nd platoon) and 1/26  (3rd platoon).   During the month the Company
fired a total of 57 rounds 106mm at targets spotted while on patrol
with infantry units.   6KIA's  (C)  and 12 KIA's  (P)  with one  (1) boat
sunk.   On 29 March an O.C. and driver were WIA while conducting a road
trafficability check.   The two Marines triggered an unknown type explosive
device while walking in front of the Ontos.   (Ref.   "C" Co. Chronology)

                    (1)   Two M-60 machine guns received as a result
of a change in T/E of H&S Company.

                    (2)   One M50A1 Ontos was dropped from "B" due
to mine damage.

                    (3)   77% of all priority requisitions were filled.

          c.    Ordnance Maintenance

                    (1)   The quarterly services were performed on the Ontos.

                    (2)   Two contact teams were dispatched.

                    (3)   Five work orders were accepted and all were completed.

9.    COMMUNICATIONS

          a.   Wired new command post for telephones and began work on
electrical wiring for offices and living quarters.

          b.   Entered 3d Marine Division TAC NET and came under the communications
guard of the 3d Marine Division.

10.   CIVIC ACTION

          a.   MEDICAL ASSISTANCE.   The Medical Contact Team established contact
with the Village Chief of     Loc Dien, in the Phu Bai area and dispensed
a total of 213 treatments to the inhabitants.

          b.   COMMUNITY DEVELOPEMENT.   The relocation of the residents of Yen
Bac sub-hamlets to sub-hamlet #5 was accomplished.   The purpose of the
move was to afford people of Yen Back more protection.

steadily throughout all TAOR's.

14.   FIRE SUPPORT.

          a.    Ontos fired 155-106mm in direct fire missions.

          b.    Ontos fired 1,828-106mm rounds as H&I missions.

          c.    Ontos fired 60-106mm rounds registration fire.

          d.    Ontos fired 50-106mm rounds recon by fire.

15.   TRAINING.   Classes were conducted in General Military subjects on
company level.   In-Country troop indoctrination lectures for all personnel
reporting aboard were held in the Battalion CP prior to assignment.
Familiarization Firing with the M-14, M1919A4 .30 caliber machine gun,
M-60 machine gun and M-2H6 .50 caliber machine gun was conducted both
under field conditions and on the Hoa Cam Rifle Range.   Practical
application of scouting, patrolling and ambush techniques was conducted
for H&S Company personnel in the Battalion AOR.
