2. Sequential listing of significant events.
a. Personnel. During the month there were four promotions to First Lieutenant, one appointment to Second Lieutenant, one promotion to Gunnery Sergeant, five selection for Staff Sergeant, 22 promotions to Sergeant, two recommendations for meritorious promotion to Sergeant, one meritorious promotion to Corporal, one meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal and one promotion to Private First Class. One man was awarded the Bronze Star, two men awarded a Meritorious Mast and one Officer recommended for a Navy Commendation Medal. The Battalion sent 55 men on R&R. Three men were medically evacuated for non-battle reasons, one man was granted Humanitarian Leave to CONUS, three men went on emergency leave and five men were awarded Article 15 punishment. One man died of a self-inflicted gun shot head wound on 25 Dec65 as a result of an accidental discharge of a .38 caliber pistol. The incident is presently under investigation. During the month 38 men were transferred and 30 replacements were joined. One Officer joined and was assigned as the S-3/S-2.
b. Administration. All companies were on Company Administration during this period. One company started the addressograph PAS system, bringing the total to two with three companies still on the old system.
c. Intelligence. Information concerning road and bridge conditions was received from III MAF photographic intelligence reports, 3d Marine Division ISUM's and reports from the gun companies. A Vietnamese interpreter reported in from Headquarters, 3d Marine Division and joined this organization for duty. Propaganda pamphlets were found outside the Battalion C. P. area in YEN BAC (1) (AT985701) by a squad sized local security patrol. The general theme of the propaganda was "refuse to fight for imperialists that are making money from you blood". Also found were safe conduct passes for ARVN soldiers to go over to the VC's. Intelligence information received by this Headquarters of interest to the gun companies was passed to them.
d. Training. During the reporting period numerous classes were conducted throughout the Battalion by H&S Company and the seperate gun companies. Nine men from H&S Company and three men from Company "C" 3d AT Battalion attended the 12th Marine's .50 Cal. machine gun school. This school/FIREX employed the .50 Cal. machine gun in the antiaircraft role, and firing was done at aerial drones. School was accomplished on the employment of the Claymore mine, and the operation of the Seismic Intrusion Device. The majority of the training in the gun companies was "on the job training". The major subjects of this OJT were: Map readin, Communication (radio procedures), preventive maintenance, driver's training (both tracked and wheeled), 106mm Recoilless Rifles and .50 Cal. spotting rifles with the M-60, M1919A4 and M-14 familiar- ization firing. Special classes were conducted on Interior Guard, Land Mine Warfare and VC Booby Traps. Personnel, equipment and vehicular inspections were conducted. A number of FIREX's were conducted using both the HEP-T AND HEAT 106mm rounds as well as the .50 Cal. spotting rifle.
